Concrete saw FAQ
What’s the difference between a concrete cutter, a power cutter and a concrete saw?
You’ve probably heard a mixed bag of names for this style of saw—power cutter, concrete saw, consaw—but they’re all just different names for the same sturdy tool. The nicknames are as varied as the versatile applications they’re used for, and born from their speed and precision.
Looking for a bit more grunt? A demo saw is what you’re after. These bad boys cut through thicker concrete than a concrete saw, so if you’re doing a lot of demolition or construction work, they’re a must-have.
Is it better to do concrete sawing wet or dry?
Wet concrete saw cutting uses water to cool the blade and it’s the gold standard for cleaner cuts, reduced wear on the blade, and to minimise the amount of hazardous airborne dust. The high silica content in concrete dust is dangerous stuff to breathe in so protecting your lungs should always be top priority.
Wet sawing is just the ticket for heavy-duty tasks like cutting thick slabs, reinforced concrete, or for deep cuts, but does rely on access to water nearby. Dry sawing will do the trick for smaller, quicker tasks like cutting shallow grooves or scoring concrete, just make sure to use a high-quality dust mask or respirator while you’re at it.
How thick of concrete can a concrete saw cut?
The depth of cut that concrete cutters can handle depends on the blade size and the specific saw model. Generally you can make a cut around half the diameter of the saw blade you have attached to your concrete saw. So if you’re rocking a cordless saw like the Makita Power Cut with its 355mm blade, you get a massive maximum cutting depth of 127mm. For shallow cuts a solid unit like the Milwaukee Cut Off Saw will give you a respectable 86.4mm of cutting depth from its 230mm blade. With loads of concrete saws of different sizes, there’s one that’ll make the cut for your next project.
