Description

The Makita 18V LXT Sub-Compact Brushless Driver Drill (DDF487) is a drilling and driving solution with significantly less weight. The 18V Sub Compact Driver Drill is part of a new class of compact, with the size and weight of lower voltage tools but with the performance, power and compatibility of 18V.

The DDF487 has an efficient brushless motor with two speed settings and dual L.E.D. lights to illuminate the work area. At only 150mm and 1.6kg. (with battery, sold separately) it's a drilling and driving solution with superior comfort and handling.

Features:

  • 2 Drilling Modes - screwdriving mode (rotation with clutch) for achieving an even consistent finish when fastening screws. Drilling mode (rotation only) achieving 40Nm max. torque.
  • LED Joblight - high brightness twin LED joblight with pre glow and after glow functions. Illuminating the working area for greater visibility during application
  • 2 Speed Mechanical Gearing - high speed mode produces 1,700rpm for rapid drilling speed while low speed produces high levels of torque to suit high load operation.
  • Durable aluminium gear housing - highly durable aluminium diecast gear housing protects the tool for potential damage that may occur on a jobsite.
  • XPT - Extreme Protection Technology protects the tool against dust & moisture even in the harshest jobsite conditions, increasing durability

Makita DDF487Z — Small, Light, and Gets Used All the Time

Posted by Greg on 6th Feb 2026

This drill has become one of my most-used tools. It’s compact, light, and really comfortable to use, especially for everyday jobs where a bigger drill just feels like overkill. Despite the size, it’s got plenty of power for drilling pilot holes, assembling cabinets, and general workshop and around-the-house work. What I really like is the balance — it feels great in the hand and doesn’t wear you out, even after using it for a while. The brushless motor is smooth and efficient, the clutch is easy to dial in, and it gives good control for more delicate work where you don’t want to overdrive screws. It’s not pretending to be a heavy-duty hammer drill, and that’s exactly why it’s so good. It’s the drill I reach for first when I just want to get the job done quickly and comfortably. If you’re already on Makita 18V batteries and want a compact, reliable driver drill, this one’s an excellent choice.
