    Eclipse 125mm/5" swivel vice

Posted by Mark on 2nd Jul 2026

Even tho Eclipse products aren't often made in the UK any more, I have a residual fondness for them. I spent about 2 hours "fettling" this vice (getting rid of the powdercoat on the mating faces of the swivel and the bolt head track positions under the swivel base, adding washers under the nuts of the swivel locks, and turning and attaching a centering spigot out of delrin for the underside of the vice, to keep it concentric with, and not sloppy on the swivel base. I also ground the ends of the jaws so they didn't have off-centre & overlapping ends, as I need to do fine work and clamp things precisely sometimes. The mainscrew is a bit rough and ready, but adequate, and the sliding faces have some pretty pronounced machining marks on them, but are regular and flat. They could have spent a bit more time and effort on a finer grind on the sliding surfaces, and got the tolerances a bit better (the outer jaw is a bit sloppier than I'd like). I'm teetering between giving this 3 and 4 stars, but will settle on 3.5. If what I've done was done in the factory, It'd be 4.5, and with better tolerances 4.75, as the casting is good, and the plating and form of the handles pretty good also.
