Sockets FAQ
What are the most commonly used sockets?
When it comes to getting the job done, a few socket types always seem to come out on top. Whether you're a seasoned pro or serious DIYer, these are the go-to sockets you'll find yourself reaching for time and time again:
- Standard (shallow) sockets:Great for everyday jobs where the bolt or nut is easy to access.
- Deep sockets:Perfect for long bolts or recessed fasteners, especially in automotive work.
- Spark plug sockets:Designed with a rubber insert or magnet to safely remove and install spark plugs without cracking them.
- Impact driver sockets:Built for use with power tools and high-torque jobs; tough, thick-walled, and ready for anything.
- Socket extensions:Not technically a socket, but essential for reaching into tight or awkward spots.
- Universal or swivel sockets:Ideal for working around angles and tight corners where a straight shot won’t cut it.
Having a mix of these in your tool kit means you're pretty much ready for whatever the job throws at you.
With fast delivery Australia-wide, it’s easy to get the right socket exactly when you need it from Tool Kit Depot.
Is an impact socket stronger than a regular socket?
While regular tool sockets are made from durable chrome vanadium steel for everyday torque tasks, impact sockets are engineered a little differently. Built from a thicker, slightly softer chromoly (Chrome Molybdenum), they can handle the extreme torque and vibrations that come from using power tools like impact wrenches or drivers. The internal hammering action of these tools requires sockets that won't crack or shatter under pressure—impact sockets are up to the challenge.
Is it OK to use impact sockets with a ratchet?
So you’ve found yourself in the middle of a job, and all you can find is an impact wrench socket? No worries! You can absolutely use impact wrench sockets with a normal hand ratchet, the main concern will be whether you have enough tool clearance. That’s because impact sockets tend to have thicker walls (meaning larger outside diameters), but if it fits in the space, you’re good to go!
Important Safety Tip:Never use a regular socket on an impact tool. Regular sockets have a thinner wall design and can shatter, putting you in danger. So make sure you avoid this combo—safety first!
Are spark plug sockets different to normal sockets?
Yep, spark plug sockets are different from standard sockets—and for good reason. They’re specially designed to remove and install spark plugs safely, without damaging the fragile ceramic insulator.
Here’s what sets them apart:
- Built-in rubber insert or magnetHolds the spark plug in place so it doesn’t drop or crack during removal or installation.
- Longer design:Typically deeper than regular sockets to reach down into engine wells.
- Specific sizingUsually come in 5/8 inch or 13/16 inch, which match the most common spark plug sizes.
So while they might look similar at first glance, spark plug sockets are purpose-built for one very specific (and important) job—and they do it well.
