Petrol lawn mower FAQ
How long should a petrol mower last?
When cared for, a petrol mower can last for 10+ years. While brands like Honda, Husqvarna, and Masport petrol lawn mowers all use high-quality parts and construction that keep them going time after time, there’s a lot you can do to extend the life of your mower.
If you want your mower to last, you’ll need to keep on top of maintenance. It’s a small task (recommended at every 50 hours of use or once per year) that makes a big difference, as petrol mowers can last up to 10 years or more for residential use when given some TLC:
- Make sure to use high-quality oil
- Change the oil regularly to keep it running smoothly
- Keep the blades nice and sharp so the mower does less work
- Check the filters and spark plugs are changed out when needed.
- And finally, give the blades and underbody a quick clean to remove grass clippings after each mow.
Will petrol lawn mowers cut long grass?
Petrol mowers have powerful motors, but even they’ll struggle with grass that’s longer than about 15 cm.
So if your grass is more of a jungle than a lawn, your best bet is to use a brush cutter or line trimmer to get it started. Once you’ve cut it to 10-15 cm, you can come in with your petrol push mower or self-propelled mower and finish the job. Trying to do it all with the mower may be a tempting time saver, but it’ll wear it out much faster.
For best results on long grass, sharpen your blades, and only cut off one-third of the grass’s height at a time to keep it nice and healthy. Cut in stages with a few days between so it has time to recover.
Does a petrol lawn mower take long to start?
Petrol mowers can take longer to start than electric mowers or ride on mowers, as you need to pull on a starter cable to get them going. But once they’re going, petrol lawn mowers are powerful and long-lasting, and can easily handle large areas of grass.
So what can you do to get them to start easily the first time?
Stale petrol can often be the cause of petrol mowers not starting, so make sure you only fill up with as much as you need for the job at hand. Also, if your mower has a primer button, just push it a couple of times to avoid flooding the engine.
